Automation specialist Prime Vision has made its innovative Sorting Projection solution available to the wider market following a successful deployment with Dutch postal operator PostNL.
Developed in partnership with PostNL and Genuin Engineering, the Sorting Projection solution reads the parcel label as it moves toward the end of the sorting line and then projects a route number directly onto the package using a laser beam. With the potential to follow multiple parcels simultaneously, the solution’s Handling Projector can keep the laser in place until an operator removes the parcel.
Dirk-Jan Brouwer, program director at Prime Vision, said, “The amount of parcels being shipped via e-commerce just keeps increasing, as does the complexity and variety of the address and dispatch labels. Inevitably, at some point, these parcels need to be manually sorted, and as such, are requiring increasingly more time per parcel to process.
“All these small but crucial delays add-up and result in further strain on sorting lines, often working far harder than they were designed for, to meet the time-sensitive delivery slots that a thriving e-commerce market demands. The Handling Projector directly addresses this issue.”
Praised for its simplicity, the solution recently picked up Sorting Center Innovation of the Year award at the 2017 Parcel and Postal Technology International Awards. The versatility and scalability of the Handling Projector enables the system to be adapted and configured to meet almost any requirement.
Its open-source software also enables the projector to be incorporated into most mainstream sorting and scanning systems, providing a significant boost for existing lines. Its intuitive design saves on training costs and multiple projectors can operate as a standalone system, enabling posts to scale up operations with minimal capital investment.
“One of the key advantages of the Handling Projector is the collective technology contained within,” added Brouwer. “Each unit has recognition sensors, laser projector, and recognition software, making the Handling Projector not only a significant and pioneering, turn-key solution but also incredible value for money. The sum of its components, in both technical capability and pure monetary terms, is astonishing.”
